STAGE 2 - Walking Down the Garden Path

Stage Two of The Coven focuses on deepening your connection with plants through direct identification, cultivation, and relationship-building. This stage emphasises practical skills in recognising, growing, and understanding plants on a deeper level, including their medicinal properties and chemical constituents.  We work on the principles that to truly know plants you need to work with them and alongside them, knowing them as more than just herbal actions on the page.

Step onto the garden path… Let’s take a stroll through the world of herbs, where every leaf, root, and flower has a story to tell. Observe, sketch, taste, and immerse yourself in nature’s wisdom. Your connection to plants is deepening—embrace the journey.

What You Will Learn

How To Recognise Plants:

  • Developing skills in plant identification through observation of leaves, flowers, stems, and growth patterns. Starting to understand some basic botany.
  • A tour of the herb garden; gaining hands-on growing experience.

Gardening and Growing Herbs:

  • Hands-on experience in cultivating herbs, from seed to harvest.
  • The ideal growing conditions, soil health, and companion planting techniques.
  • Sustainable gardening methods, including organic and biodynamic practices.

To Make Herbal Friends:

  • Building deeper, intuitive relationships with plants through direct engagement.
  • Creating herbal characters and connecting to their personalities, exploring plant spirit connection and communication with your green friends.

To Understand Plant Constituents:

  • The chemical makeup of plants and how different constituents contribute to their medicinal actions.
  • Key phytochemicals such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and volatile oils.
  • How plant constituents interact with the body and how to extract them effectively for herbal preparations.

Aims:

By the end of Stage Two, you will have a foundational knowledge of plant identification, herbal cultivation, and phytochemistry, strengthening your ability to work confidently with herbs in both practical and energetic ways. This stage paves the way for deeper herbal exploration and hands-on medicine-making in future stages.
